Meditations 5.18.1
Marcus Aurelius to himself
Nothing happens to anyone that he is not naturally fitted to bear. The same things happen to another person, and he stands firm and remains unharmed, either because he does not know what has happened or because he is showing off his greatness of mind. It is dreadful, then, if ignorance and the desire to please are stronger than wisdom.
