Meditations 12.29.1

Marcus Aurelius to himself

Σωτηρία βίου ἕκαστον δι’ ὅλου αὐτὸ τί ἐστιν ὁρᾶν, τί μὲν αὐτοῦ τὸ ὑλικόν, τί δὲ τὸ αἰτιῶδες· ἐξ ὅλης τῆς ψυχῆς τὰ δίκαια ποιεῖν καὶ τἀληθῆ λέγειν. τί λοιπὸν ἢ ἀπολαύειν τοῦ ζῆν συνάπτοντα ἄλλο ἐπ’ ἄλλῳ ἀγαθόν, ὥστε μηδὲ τὸ βραχύτατον διάστημα ἀπολείπειν;

The salvation of life: to see each thing thoroughly for what it is—what its material is, what its cause is—and with the whole soul to do what is just and speak what is true. What remains but to enjoy living, joining one good thing to another so as to leave not even the smallest interval?
