Meditations 12.19.1

Marcus Aurelius to himself

Αἴσθου ποτὲ ὅτι κρεῖττόν τι καὶ δαιμονιώτερον ἔχεις ἐν σαυτῷ τῶν τὰ πάθη ποιούντων καὶ καθάπαξ τῶν νευροσπαστούντων σε. τί μου νῦν ἐστιν ἡ διάνοια; μὴ φόβος; μὴ ὑποψία; μὴ ἐπιθυμία; μὴ ἄλλο τι τοιοῦτον;

Realize at last that you have within you something stronger and more divine than the things that produce your passions and, altogether, pull your strings. What is my thinking now? Is it fear? Suspicion? Desire? Something else of that kind?
