Aeneid 12.189–191

Aeneas pledging equal terms to the Latins

non ego nec Teucris Italos parere iubebo

nec mihi regna peto: paribus se legibus ambae

invictae gentes aeterna in foedera mittant.

I will not order the Italians to submit to the Trojans,

nor do I claim a kingdom for myself: under equal laws let both

unconquered peoples enter an eternal compact.
